Innovative pacemaker lighting solution wins big at ITS Awards

February 2024

The Burnley Tunnel Pacemaker Lighting System won the Smart Transport Infrastructure Award at the 14th Annual Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) Awards in Brisbane on the 15th February 2024.

Service Stream was engaged by Transurban in 2022 to review the design through an Early Contractor Involvement process, as well as supply, install and commission the pacemaker lighting system within the Burnley Tunnel in Melbourne, Victoria.

This innovative solution involves bands of green light moving along the tunnel walls as a visual representation of the optimum speed. It was designed to help motorists maintain a consistent speed, keep traffic flowing by reducing congestion, and improve safety through the tunnel and connecting road networks.

Service Stream is enormously proud to be an integral part of the success of the Burnley Tunnel pacemaker lighting system.

“Our expert ITS team worked closely with Transurban right from the beginning to deliver a state-of-the-art solution for our client and the thousands of motorists using the Burnley Tunnel every day,” says Michael Willey, Head of ITS Projects at Service Stream.

Michael attributes the success of the project to the highly collaborative approach fostered by Transurban with all partners including SMEC, Light Project, Aurecon and Summit Automation.

“This project is a great example of how genuine collaboration yields outstanding results,” says Michael.

The pacemaker system went live in March 2023 and has resulted in measurable improvements for motorists. Fine-tuning of the world’s first dynamic pacemaker system continue to improve outcomes.
